History of Champagne - Webinar - Sunday

History of Champagne - Webinar - Sunday

Champagne is nicknamed the “King of Wines and the Wine of Kings”. To understand how Champagne gained this reputation, we must go back to its roots and retrace its history.

I will take you on a journey from the selfish Romans in the 3rd century to the industrious monks in the Middle Ages, then to the elaborate feasts at Versailles during the 18th century, the exciting innovations during industrialisation in the 19th century, the depths of despair and destruction during the infestation of Phylloxera, WWI, Prohibition and WWII, then up again during postwar exuberance. I will of course underline the role of women during our journey. If we have time left, we can chat about the obsession some rappers have with Champagne today.

It will be a bit of a rollercoaster ride because the history of Champagne is filled with many ups and downs. Along the way you will learn some fun facts about Champagne.

I will be using Zoom to host the online video chats. If you have never used Zoom before, don’t worry, it is simple as pie. When you register for the session you will receive a link to join online at the given time. You just need to follow the simple instructions to download and run Zoom a few minutes before the session starts. If you are nervous about it, I am happy to do a test run with you whenever suits you best.
