International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8 March every year all around the world. I celebrate women in Champagne every day because I only use champagnes made by women in my champagne classes and tasting events. I also only take people to visit houses where women play an important role (CEO, cellar master, owner, winemaker, winegrower). I have been working with women in the wine industry for the last six years and it has opened up my eyes to their specific challenges. I feel it is important to take this opportunity to thank and celebrate the fearless women in Champagne today.
There are of course many women who paved the way in the past, like the incredible widows Clicquot, Pommery, and Laurent-Perrier. We probably wouldn’t be drinking as much champagne today if they hadn’t developed the markets in Russia and England, or invented the riddling table, started using chalk pits to age bottles, or launched the first vintage champagne, the first brut champagne, the first zero dosage champagne, or invented the blended rosé method.
Join me to celebrate and learn about these women in Champagne. I will open some special bottles that will illustrate the innovations made by women. And food that pairs with each bottle opened will be provided.
